Depending on individual needs, care may involve psychiatric assessment, psychological support, medication management, personalised formulation, family guidance and ongoing clinical review.

Your mental health care pathway

Patients can access our psychiatric service directly through a psychiatric consultation or, where a broader initial assessment is appropriate, through our structured New Patient Intake Pathway.

Psychiatric consultation

A psychiatric consultation provides an opportunity to discuss your current concerns directly with a psychiatrist. During the consultation, your psychiatrist may explore:

  • Current symptoms and concerns
  • Mental health history
  • Relevant medical history
  • Current and previous medication
  • Family and social circumstances
  • Sleep, mood and daily functioning
  • Previous diagnoses or treatment
  • Current psychological or emotional difficulties
  • Neurodevelopmental concerns where relevant
  • Appropriate treatment and next steps

Following assessment, recommendations are made according to your individual clinical needs. These may include treatment planning, medication where clinically appropriate, psychological intervention, further assessment or investigation, lifestyle recommendations and ongoing psychiatric review.

Option two

New Patient Intake Pathway

€200

For patients who would benefit from a more comprehensive introduction to the clinic. Rather than beginning with a short standalone appointment, this pathway allows our clinical team to develop a broader understanding of what you are experiencing before establishing the most appropriate next steps.

  1. 1. Initial clinical intake — approximately 1 hour

    With a mental health nurse or psychologist, gathering relevant history and clinically triaging your needs. Medication is not prescribed during this session.

  2. 2. Psychiatric consultation — 30 minutes

    With Dr Gabriel Ellul, normally within approximately 4–6 weeks, subject to clinical priority and availability. The information gathered at intake supports the review.

  3. 3. Follow-up support

    A member of our mental health team may follow up to understand how you are progressing and help coordinate the next stage of your care.

Medication is not prescribed during the initial intake

The intake session is an information-gathering and clinical triage appointment. Medication may only be considered by an appropriately qualified medical professional following clinical assessment and where it is considered suitable. Where the initial assessment identifies a need for more immediate psychiatric input, the team will assess the appropriate course of action.

Trauma & complex PTSD

Trauma can affect far more than memories of a difficult experience. It can influence emotional regulation, relationships, sleep, physical wellbeing, sense of safety and everyday functioning.

Prijorità provides specialist psychiatric assessment and support for individuals experiencing trauma-related difficulties, including PTSD and complex PTSD. Our approach considers both the person's current symptoms and the wider experiences that may have contributed to their difficulties.

Where appropriate, psychiatric care may be coordinated with psychological intervention and other forms of support to create a more comprehensive treatment pathway.

ADHD & autism

Dr Gabriel Ellul has a particular clinical interest in ADHD and autism, including presentations where neurodevelopmental differences interact with mental health difficulties.

Adults may seek psychiatric support because of difficulties with attention, organisation, impulsivity, emotional regulation, relationships, work or everyday functioning. Others may already have an ADHD or autism diagnosis and require psychiatric support for associated mental health needs or treatment.

Personalised formulation

A diagnosis can be important, but it does not always explain the full picture. Where appropriate, our clinicians use personalised formulation to develop a deeper understanding of the different factors contributing to a person's current difficulties. The purpose is to help develop a treatment plan that reflects the individual rather than relying solely on a diagnostic label. This may consider:

  • Previous experiences
  • Current circumstances
  • Biological and medical factors
  • Psychological factors
  • Relationships and social environment

Treatment planning

Following assessment, an individualised treatment plan may be developed. Treatment recommendations are discussed with the patient so that they understand the available options and can participate in decisions regarding their care. Depending on clinical need, this may involve:

Psychiatric review appointments

Mental healthcare often requires ongoing review rather than a single appointment. Review consultations allow your psychiatrist to assess progress, discuss any changes in symptoms or circumstances, review treatment and determine whether adjustments are required.

Where medication forms part of treatment, reviews may also consider effectiveness, tolerability, side effects and any appropriate clinical monitoring. The frequency of review appointments depends on individual clinical need.

Family guidance

Mental health difficulties can also affect partners, parents and other family members. Where clinically appropriate and with due regard to patient confidentiality and consent, our team can provide guidance to help families better understand a person's difficulties and how they may appropriately support them.

For children and young people, parental or caregiver involvement may form an important part of assessment and ongoing care.

Dr Gabriel Ellul provides psychiatric assessment, treatment and ongoing mental health care at Prijorità. His clinical work includes the assessment and management of a broad range of mental health presentations, with particular interests including trauma, complex PTSD, ADHD and autism.

His approach places emphasis on developing a detailed understanding of the individual and using personalised clinical formulation to guide treatment and ongoing care.

Where can I see a psychiatrist in Malta?
Prijorità Healthcare's psychiatry service runs from our clinic at Triq Il-Pont, Mosta MST 2150, Malta. Psychiatric consultations are provided by Dr Gabriel Ellul, Psychiatrist and Medical Director.
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist?

What is the €200 New Patient Intake?
The New Patient Intake is a structured pathway designed to provide a broader initial understanding of your needs. It includes an initial assessment with a member of the mental health team, a subsequent 30-minute psychiatric consultation with Dr Gabriel Ellul, and appropriate follow-up and care coordination.
Will I receive medication during my intake appointment?
No. The initial intake session is an information-gathering and clinical triage appointment. Medication is not prescribed during this session. Medication may only be considered by an appropriately qualified medical professional following clinical assessment and where it is considered suitable.
How quickly will I see the psychiatrist following intake?
The psychiatric appointment would normally be arranged within approximately 4 to 6 weeks, depending on clinical priority and appointment availability. If the initial assessment identifies concerns requiring more immediate psychiatric input, the clinical team will determine the appropriate next step.
Do you treat trauma and PTSD?
Yes. Psychiatric assessment and treatment are available for trauma-related mental health difficulties, including PTSD and complex PTSD.
Do you provide ADHD and autism services?
Yes. Prijorità supports adults and children with neurodevelopmental needs and provides dedicated ADHD assessment pathways. Patients who already have a diagnosis may also access psychiatric care where ongoing assessment, treatment or mental health support is required.
Can my family be involved?
Where appropriate, family members may be involved in care with the patient's consent and in accordance with confidentiality requirements. For children and young people, parents or caregivers will normally have an appropriate role within the assessment and treatment process.
What happens after my first appointment?
Your next steps depend on your individual assessment. You may be offered psychiatric review, psychological support, medication management, further assessment, investigations or another appropriate clinical pathway.
